Barnhart, Inc. breaks ground on school re-build for
San Ysidro
50-year
old Sunset Elementary School to be expanded and improved
San
Ysidro School District officials broke ground on February
12, 2002 for construction of a replacement campus for the
50-year old Sunset Elementary School. General Contractor Barnhart,
Inc. is constructing the project.
The 72,000-sf
new school will be larger than the existing facility and will
feature two levels. A solar heating system is also going to
be installed, as well as high technology wiring. The rebuild
is taking place on the existing playground on the east end
of the campus. The old school will be razed upon completion
of the new facility, which is scheduled for Fall 2003.
Funding
for the facility was made possible by the local passage of
school construction bond Proposition C in 1997. The school
was designed by Coup Smith Diaz Architects of Calexico. Mr.
David Coup is the lead architect for the project.
Barnhart
team members will include Glynna Hoekstra, Clay Make, Jim
Fisher, Ken Bingham, Jay Pennington and Jeanne Bogard.
